Hemoglobin Electrophoresis (Abnormal Hb Studies)

A haemoglobin electrophoresis test is a blood test used to measure and identify the various kinds of haemoglobin in the bloodstream.

Hemoglobin electrophoresis is among the routine blood tests done during pregnancy and the first prenatal visit. The hemoglobin electrophoresis tests for abnormal forms of hemoglobin (hemoglobinopathy). Most patients with abnormal hemoglobin have no symptoms but could potentially transmit the gene to their fetus.

Technique: High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)/ Capillary Electrophoresis

Sample: 4 ml. (2 ml. Minimum) Whole Blood in 1 EDTA (Lavender top) tube.

Sample Collection Instruction: Must Record date of birth, sex, race and religion, history of blood transfusion on the test requisition form. The checklist should accompany with TRF

Process:

The lab technician will collect blood sample from the patient. This will be processed in a lab and the report provided usually Same day via SMS and Email.
