Oral Cholera Vaccine (O1 and O139) is helps prevent cholera.

Cholera vaccines are available:

ShanChol (manufactured by Shantha Biotec in India)

Euvichol-Plus (manufactured by Eubiologics).

It can be given to anyone above the age of 1 year orally. For adults, who are traveling to an area of active cholera transmission.

Dosage and administration

The recommended dose of the vaccine (1.5mL) is to be administered orally.

The vaccine is presented as suspension. Therefore, after shaking the vaccine container rigorously, 1.5 mL of the vaccine should be squirted into the mouth. Take a sip of water if necessary.

The primary immunization schedule consists of two doses given at an interval of two to four weeks.

The protective effect begins within 7-10 days of completion of the vaccination schedule.

This vaccine should be taken on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 1 hour after eating.
